Full Accompanying Art Piece by thousandthsummer: [link]

This is the story I wrote for the Mass Effect Big Bang, which is basically a 8,000-11,000 word minimum challenge for a fandom where many authors and artist partner together to create the best new content they can.

I'm placing the story here, but there's a ton more end notes on AO3 here [link] that I strongly suggest you go read if you enjoy the story. I'm also really hoping I didn't edit anything directly in AO3 since this is directly from my Word doc =/

Summary: Shepard resists Harbinger’s indoctrination attempt and wakes up under rubble in London but manages to finish the run to the beam. Once the Crucible is in place, Shepard must then choose how to end the Reaper threat so that the galaxy can be spared. But the choices and their subsequent consequences may be too much for her to bear…

Description: This story utilizes the indoctrination theory, as well as the scrapped idea for an ending that fans found that could have happened for Mass Effect. The theory was vague since it was early in development, so I had to do a lot of research and creative manipulation to make it seem somewhat plausible. If you don't know it, I don't want to spoil it here :)

This story tries its best to stay close to the official canon while creating an alternate ending, as I thought this would be a great challenge. It also uses numerous bits of scrapped ideas, and some cut dialog between two characters. Notes at the end will give specifics from where I pulled from scrapped ideas, and reasons why certain things are the way they are. Just go into it with an open mind.

I want to thank thousandthsummer for her wonderful artwork which you see in-story. It was a pleasure to work with her. I also want to thank Alisha Torn for organizing the Mass Effect Big Bang which produced this. Thank you for reading.

I truly have no words to describe this magnificent piece of literature here. The amount of detail that went into it, its just amazing how well it was all put together, the flow and pure emotion of what was happening. You clearly took the time to look up and incorporate many different aspects that were taken out of the full product, I believe anyone person who read this and is aware of the "issues" with the exist plot, they would feel much better.

No issues throughout the whole thing, maybe one or two things could be reworded to add even more emotion to it, but that's not truly needed, more than enough exist already. And its pace and conclusion were all beyond excellent. On this scale, its a 4.9/5, on mine...8/5

OMG...you've been holding out on us...this...this was just :squee: The amount of work that went into this, I really can't describe what I think, its that fantastic. You did exactly what we all wanted, you gave us an ending that has meaningful...if this was the existing ending, many people would feel much better about it. I really really can't wait to see what part two will be like...it will be worth the wait, that's most certain....awesome job, treat yourself to something nice :love:, you've earn it.... Keep it Up:heart:!!!

:hug: Thank you so much for even reading it! It was...really hard for me T_T Because there was so much I wanted to incorporate and I wanted to make up something that was plausible that BioWare might do. I really remember getting stuck in the middle with the new choices and scrapping and rewriting several parts, which I've never really done before. Just thinking about it makes me want to pull my hair out. Speaking from a writing perspective, this was one of the hardest things I've ever done, trying to stay within the canon and add everything else while staying within that canon! It was like the essence of why fanfiction can be hard ._.

I'm really happy that it didn't come out as a big pile of mush and even more happy that you enjoyed it so much. I can't wait to write part two as I'll be able to have a bit more freedom and it will be quite a challenge to write fresh new action rather than reaction. I've been treating myself to some time off from writing haha! I feel guilty though ;_;
